As we all know, the devastation and wrath from Hurricane Irma in Florida ripped through the Keys to Tampa Bay and beyond. This left a lasting impact on our ability to safely care for the greyhounds in critical emergencies.
GPA Tampa Bay houses 68 retired racing greyhounds at Derby Lane which sits directly on Tampa Bay. While the kennel compound was spared this time, we may not be so lucky in the future. Our kennel is in Evacuation zone A, the first to evacuate in Pinellas County and the first to be affected by the storm surge. It doesn’t always take a hurricane the magnitude of Irma to put our kennel in harm’s way. Tampa Bay is well known for lightning & heavy rains during the months of June through November, causing power outages for hours which are also devastating to the greyhounds.
During Irma many wonderful volunteers stepped up to help us evacuate our adoption kennel and we are eternally grateful. But, with every disaster comes a learning curve.
Our lesson was that we truly are not prepared in the event of another storm to keep our hounds safe and secure…..and we need YOUR help!
We are asking for donations to help us prepare for future events. With your donations we can purchase the following items to better prepare us for future emergencies so that no harm comes to our greyhounds. Below is the list of items we need to purchase to help accomplish this goal.
These items will keep our kennel operational during a power shortage:
o 2 portable a/c units
o Commercial powered fans
o Heavy duty extension cords
These items will allow us to safely house greyhounds in temporary foster homes should an evacuation event occur:
o Emergency medical kits
o Tracking collars
